Trail Update
In the summer of 2017 we cut the ribbon on the BCRD Galena Summer Trails project, a partnership between BCRD, Galena Lodge and the Sawtooth NRA!  We have successfully constructed and reconstructed 47 miles of singletrack trails around Galena Lodge. The trails are suited for all users including beginner, intermediate and advanced hikers, runners, equestrians and mountain bikers.

Galena Lodge sits at the heart of a beautiful, historical and ecological area in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) just north of Ketchum, Idaho.  Galena Lodge is owned by the Blaine County Recreation District (BCRD).  Together with our partners and concessionaires, Don Shepler and Erin Zell, we provide world class Nordic skiing and snowshoeing, dining, weddings, summer camps, as well as many other activities.

In 2007, the BCRD, the operators of the lodge, and other community groups such as Big Wood Back-country Trails conceived the idea to develop a summer trail system around the Lodge to celebrate the area's history, ecology, and provide great multi-use non-motorized recreation.  The goal was to mirror the winter experience at Galena that includes activities like Nordic skiing and snowshoeing with a summer singletrack experience for activities like hiking, mountain biking, trail running, and equestrian.

The BCRD submitted a multi-use trails proposal based on a design by International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) to the SNRA.  The SNRA pursued an environmental assessment of the proposed project and concluded that process with a final decision in July 2013 to approve a 47 mile total system.  Once completed, a stacked loop system will be available to hikers, bikers, runners and equestrians from beginner to advanced.

Work on the trail system commenced in the fall of 2013 and was completed in the summer of 2017.
